- Indonesian streamer Vidio aims to double paid subscribers to 8 million.
- It leads rivals like Netflix locally, but lags in premium metrics.
- 5G rollout could boost Vidio’s $2.25 billion market streaming ambitions.
Paywalls and playbills
Indonesian streaming platform Vidio aims to double its paid subscriber count to 8 million within two to three years.
This ambitious target comes amid Vidio’s plans for an IPO and fundraising initiatives through parent company Emtek Group.
Despite boasting more paid subscribers than rivals like Viu, Disney+, and Netflix in Indonesia, Vidio trails Netflix in premium viewership and monetization metrics.
Nevertheless, Emtek managing director Sutanto Hartono believes Indonesian consumers are primed for widespread paid streaming adoption.
5G fairy dust to sprinkle
To transition viewers from traditional TV, Vidio emphasizes local content like sports broadcasts and soap operas.
Though currently unprofitable, the platform recorded a 40% revenue increase to $48.5 million for the nine months ending September 2023.
With Indonesia’s digital media market projected to reach $2.25 billion in online video revenue by 2028, the anticipated nationwide 5G rollout could further propel Vidio’s streaming ambitions.
