Warding off evil

This week, OpenAI revealed that it collaborated with Microsoft to block five state-sponsored groups attempting to misuse its services, assigning them weather-themed nicknames straight from science fiction.

China-linked “Charcoal Typhoon” and “Salmon Typhoon” were among those thwarted, along with North Korean “Emerald Sleet” and Russian “Forest Blizzard.”

The creative epithets come courtesy of Microsoft’s threat actor naming system and recall giant robot characters from the 2013 film “Pacific Rim.”

While the movie featured a Chinese “Crimson Typhoon” and Russian “Cherno Alpha,” OpenAI says it disrupted real-world groups leveraging its platforms potentially for surveilling open-source data.

Avoiding state-level interference

By terminating accounts and sharing information industry-wide, OpenAI aims to get ahead of state-level interference as AI governance becomes an urgent priority.

Just this week, CEO Sam Altman called subtle societal misalignments from uncontrolled AI his biggest long-term concern.

Whether the latest suspicious activity traces to a “Sandstorm” or “Blizzard,” OpenAI’s glimpse at thwarting creative code names signals it takes an expansive view towards securing its systems from both distant and familiar threats.

Monitoring for red flags extends to all Quadrant points.
