Google has released ImageFX, a new AI-powered image creation tool for generating and editing images through text prompts. Leveraging the company’s Imagen 2 technology, ImageFX aims to provide an expressive and creative image-generation experience.

New feature for creating images

Users can create images simply by entering text and then refine them using the suggested modifier “chips” to pivot the image in new directions easily.

Google says technical safeguards and training processes focus on limiting problematic content.

Watermarking for protections

The launch comes amid the proliferation of AI image generators from competitors like DALL-E and Midjourney, albeit not without controversies around fake content.

Google claims ImageFX has protections like watermarking for traced AI creations and filtering certain public figures. In tandem, Google announced expanding Imagen 2’s availability, including integrations into its experimental search engine, its Bard chatbot, and Google Cloud – enabling more text-to-image capabilities and allowing third-party access.

However, details about Imagen 2’s training data sources remain scarce.

Google continues facing scrutiny around properly crediting source materials as legal questions swirl regarding commercial usage of scraped data. For now, the company appears to be erring on the side of caution by avoiding specifics.
