KonsultaMD, a health tech company offering telemedicine and medicine delivery services, has rapidly grown to become one of the leading players in the Philippines health tech industry.

Much of this success can be attributed to the company’s backing from major corporations Ayala and Globe Telecom.

Unfair advantage boosts growth

“Obviously, being part of Globe, we have a clear, unfair advantage,” said KonsultaMD CEO Susana Beatriz Latay in an interview.

The company was launched in 2015 by Globe’s venture-building arm 917Ventures as a telemedicine consultation platform.

Eight years later, after a merger with medicine delivery company HealthNow and home healthcare services provider Aide, KonsultaMD has evolved into a comprehensive “health super app.”

Strategic partnerships

According to Latay, KonsultaMD’s relationships with Globe and Ayala have been instrumental in securing partnerships with insurance providers, health maintenance organizations (HMOs), and healthcare institutions, which are critical components of the platform.

Latay stated that these partners likely would not have worked with KonsultaMD without the credibility lent by its major backers. This unfair advantage, as Latay frankly described it, has clearly paid dividends. KonsultaMD was the most downloaded telehealth app in the Philippines in 2023, with around 280,000 active monthly users.

The app enables patients to consult doctors, obtain prescriptions, order medicine delivery quickly, and book appointments at partner hospitals and clinics. Moving forward, the company aims to expand its enterprise offerings and partner with more employers to provide KonsultaMD’s services as part of employee health benefits.
