The Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) has announced a S$30M (US$22.4M) Green Computing Funding Initiative (GCFI) to spur research and innovation into maximizing the energy efficiency of computing infrastructure and software.

Decarbonizing ICT to align for the 2045 goal

The GCFI invites proposals from institutes of higher learning to collaborate with industry players on unmet use cases, as Singapore aims to decarbonize the ICT sector in line with its 2045 net zero emissions goal.

Although representing under 5% of emissions now, ICT’s share could reach 14% by 2040 amid rapid digitalization.

IMDA industry trials

In a complementary effort, IMDA industry trials will develop guidelines for creating sustainable software to cut energy and costs. Participants include AWS, Ant Group and the Singapore Institute of Technology.

Meanwhile, GovTech seeks to further reduce the public sector’s digital carbon footprint through partnerships that consolidate data centers and migrate systems to the cloud. 70% of eligible government systems have already moved to the cloud. “Broader ecosystem inclusion is needed to scale the government’s efforts,” GovTech said.
