Mobile Platforms and frameworks continuously evolve. Remember Objective-C for iOS? Or Java for Android? Or PhoneGap for cross-platform development? Or even the Symbian OS? They have now evolved into what we have today.
Just like how platforms and frameworks evolve, so do our computers.
Think about it – from those supersize computers that took up an entire room, we now have these small computers that only take up a portion of our pockets, not to mention being a million times faster and smarter.
Now, we have various form factors of mobile computers, depending on how mobile we want to get or what type of task we want to accomplish.
Laptops: the main developer’s powerhouse (at least for now) which you can bring to any coffee shop, order a cup of coffee, and stay for as long as you want. If you know, you know.
Tablets: bigger screens for when you need more real estate, yet still portable enough to hold with one hand. Great for reading, sketching, or watching those K-dramas and animes. Don’t forget to watch “Replacing Chef Chico” though if you haven’t yet, it’s awesome Pinoy content.
Smartphones: doesn’t need mentioning but they aren’t just phones now, they’re smart too. They’re also gaming consoles, cameras, music players, movie players, flashlights, clocks, and so on.
Wearables: the tiniest we have for now which also have several form factors, from smart watches to smart rings, to smart glasses. Currently, they’re more focused on health tracking and notifications, but give it some time (I’m looking at you, Vision Pro) and we might all be living in a sci-fi movie.
Have you seen the transparent displays at CES 2024? Wouldn’t it be great if they got small enough with higher resolution to fit nicely into some eyeglass frames and give you a digital overlay of the real world? Just saying! Remember, you read it first here.
As mobile developers, our strength lies in our ability to embrace these changes, learn new skills, and stay curious. So whenever the next evolution in mobile computing comes, we’ll be ready to take it on.
Shall we call it wearable computing then? Reality computing? Holographic computing? Quantum computing? Enough of the predictions! See you again next week.
