Arizona State University (ASU) has signed on as OpenAI’s inaugural higher education customer, gaining priority access to ChatGPT Enterprise. The collaboration aims to explore AI applications across research, academics, and administration at one of the nation’s largest public universities.

Helping shape future AI for education

Starting in February, ASU will invite proposals from faculty and staff for ChatGPT implementation focusing on student success, new research avenues, and organizational efficiency. As OpenAI’s first academic design partner, ASU can help shape future AI tools for higher ed.

The partnership comes as attitudes toward AI in education continue shifting. While many schools banned ChatGPT last year over cheating concerns, some have since reversed course to host workshops on AI’s learning potential.

ChatGPT: An academic asset?

ASU leans toward the latter camp in viewing AI as an academic asset if used responsibly.

Concretely, the university will provide ChatGPT Enterprise accounts to employees and run an open innovation challenge to develop ethical AI applications. “We aim to foster an environment where AI resources are utilized effectively and ethically,” said ASU’s CIO Lev Gonick.

ASU hopes to set an innovative yet responsible model for integrating AI in academics.
