The Top 5 Apps for Any Solo Traveler

Have you ever thought about solo travelling and seeing the world?

Have you ever been scared that you might not make it back home in one piece if you left?

Fear not.

As someone who has travelled to 51 countries, 100+ cities on 5 continents, I’m going to share with you the essentials that have helped me have the best time on the road, meet new people, see the best sights, save money, and of course, become a better version of myself.

1) Hostelworld

Hostelworld is the best app for solo travellers looking to find reliable and affordable hostel accommodation – even at the last minute! With the largest repository of hostels signing up, you are sure to find the right option that suits you.

Pro Tip: If there is a Selina in a city you’re visiting – stay there. With very good quality rooms, a co-working space, and events that cater to mixing and mingling, it is the perfect hostel for those looking to fulfill all their needs.

2) Google Translate

Google Translate has saved me more times than I can count. From making sure that I am requesting people for help with the correct words, asking for the right directions, or negotiating with the correct numbers, Google Translate is a must-have.

I once had a conversation with a taxi driver in Sao Paulo entirely through Google Translate! We talked about ourselves sharing a little insight into each other’s backgrounds, and of course, Palmeiras FC.

3) Maps.me

Maps.me is the best navigation tool for solo travelers and is trusted by over 140 million users worldwide.

Why is it better than Google Maps? Because you don’t need an internet connection to use it.

Maps.me provides travelers with up-to-date driving, cycling, and walking routes anywhere in the world, and is especially useful for travelers looking to save money by not purchasing a phone plan in every country they visit.

I particularly like using their turn-by-turn navigation, labelling favorite locations, and searching for public restrooms features when I’m on the road.

4) Currency

As a traveler, it is normal to be thinking of your local currency when shopping in a foreign country. You want to know the value of the item you’re paying for in the currency you earn in, and that makes total sense. Currency is personally my favorite conversion app because it provides data for 150 countries, its user interface is very simple, and it accurately updates data so that you’re able to convert in the most updated rate day-to-day.

Special Shoutout: I know many travel friends who also use Xe – I can highly recommend that app as well.

5) Bumble

For all the single people out there, Bumble is a great way to meet new people and explore the city you’re in – especially with locals! Connecting with locals can help you experience a destination more authentically than just going out to a random bar that was recommended online.

Going out with a local also means enjoying the places and food favored by the locals, guaranteeing the best hometown experience. Who knows, maybe you’ll walk away with a new friend, a spicy hookup story, a connection you may see again on your travels, or even true love! Open-mindedness and willingness are key to enjoying this type of experience.
