California’s PsiQuantum just announced massive plans to construct the planet’s inaugural commercial quantum computer in Brisbane, Australia.

Backed by Singapore’s Temasek, the quantum computing startup secured a whopping $620 million from Australian and Queensland authorities.

What sets PsiQuantum’s utility-scale quantum computer apart is its error correction capability, allowing billions of computational steps without pesky quantum noise interference.

CEO Jeremy O’Brien likens the audacious project to building a cutting-edge data center.

Why Australia? why not?

PsiQuantum’s photonics approach germinated in Brisbane’s labs, complemented by the region’s skilled workforce. Plus, Australia’s abundant sun, wind, and space align perfectly with quantum computing’s climate change applications – a key focus area.

For Temasek, investing in PsiQuantum represents a strategic play in emerging tech primed to drive innovation and economic value.

The firm’s Russell Tham notes that error-free, utility-scale quantum computing could revolutionize everything from materials to drug discovery.
