Russian Tech Giant Targets Southeast Asia

Yandex, often dubbed “Russia’s Google,” announces plans to invest in Indonesia’s AI ecosystem and expand its search platform presence.

The move comes through direct discussions between Yandex’s international search chief Alexander Popovskiy and Indonesia’s Communications Minister Meutya Hafid.

Strategic Timing Amid Global Restrictions

The expansion effort emerges despite Western technology restrictions on Russia, highlighting Yandex’s push to find new markets for its AI capabilities.

The company, which develops its own large language models, faces challenges accessing crucial microchip supplies for AI development in its home market.

Indonesia’s Growing Tech Appeal

This announcement follows major tech investments in Indonesia, including Nvidia’s $200 million AI center partnership and Microsoft’s $1.7 billion cloud services commitment.

The country’s large tech-savvy population continues attracting global technology players seeking growth opportunities.
