From serenading cats to battling zombies

Spotify has unveiled a new beta feature that allows users to create personalized playlists using AI technology.

Currently available to Android and iOS users in the U.K. and Australia, the AI playlists can be generated based on a wide variety of written prompts, ranging from standard genre or time frame requests to more creative options like “songs to serenade my cat” or “beats to battle a zombie apocalypse.”

To create these AI-generated playlists, Spotify employs large language models (LLMs) to understand user intent and combines this information with its personalization technology, which takes into account the listener’s history and preferences.

Users can refine the generated playlists by issuing commands such as “less upbeat” or “more pop” and can remove unwanted songs by swiping left.

Building on previous AI successes

The introduction of AI playlists follows Spotify’s successful launch of the AI DJ feature, which uses a combination of Sonantic and OpenAI technology to create an artificial version of the voice of Spotify’s head of cultural partnerships, Xavier “X” Jernigan.

The company has been investing in AI technology to enhance its streaming service. CEO Daniel Ek has hinted at future applications, such as summarizing podcasts and creating AI-generated audio ads.
