Quantum computing? more like quant-YUM for Singapore!
Singapore is poised to make a quantum leap in its tech prowess with a substantial S$300 million (US$221.7 million) investment in the National Quantum Strategy (NQS) over the next five years.
Announced by Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat at the Asia Tech x Singapore 2024 event, this strategic move aims to propel the nation’s advancement in quantum technology – the cutting-edge field that delves into the physics of subatomic particles.
A key pillar of the NQS is the creation of a future-ready quantum workforce. The Center for Quantum Technologies will serve as a national R&D hub, while the National Quantum Scholarships Scheme will fund a whopping 200 scholars at the PhD and Master’s levels over the next five years.
This initiative underscores Singapore’s commitment to fostering a talent pool capable of driving quantum tech innovation.
Deeptech takes the center stage
Heng also unveiled the Green Data Center Roadmap, a visionary plan to add at least 300 megawatts of green energy capacity to power data centers more efficiently and sustainably.
This initiative will involve partnerships with various companies, promoting a collaborative approach to sustainable development.
Moreover, Singapore’s Infocomm Media Development Authority will work closely with the industry to make data centers more eco-friendly through hardware and software optimization.
Singapore’s unwavering focus on deeptech is evident in its latest quantum tech investment. In 2020, the government set aside a similar amount for co-investments in deeptech startups.
More recently, Temasek launched a US$55 million program in collaboration with top universities to further bolster the deeptech ecosystem, solidifying Singapore’s position as a hub for cutting-edge technological innovation.
