Not Your Average Coworking Space

The Engine Accelerator in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is revolutionizing the startup ecosystem for “tough tech” companies.

This unique facility combines a coworking space with specialized labs, offering entrepreneurs access to million-dollar equipment like quantum computers and molten salt furnaces.

Founded by MIT, The Engine aims to bridge the gap between groundbreaking research and market-ready products in fields such as climate tech, health sciences, and advanced systems.

WeWork Meets Mad Science

Unlike traditional accelerators, The Engine doesn’t invest in startups. Instead, it charges rent for space and equipment usage. This model allows young companies to access crucial resources without diluting their equity.

The facility’s president, Emily Knight, emphasizes their commitment to providing a turnkey experience, stating, “We take care of everything from the safety to the security to the concierge. So you can move in and on day one your bench is going to have some pipettes on it.”

Innovation Hotspot

The Engine has become a bustling hub for deep-tech innovation. Startups like Pascal, which developed a highly efficient solid refrigerant, have found a home here.

Despite higher costs compared to some alternatives, founders praise the intangible benefits, including networking opportunities and collaborative atmosphere.

Looking ahead, The Engine is exploring the possibility of accepting equity in lieu of rent, further supporting cash-strapped startups pushing the boundaries of technology.
