Nvidia, the US chipmaker, has partnered Indonesian telco Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison to open an AI center in Surakarta, Central Java.

The two companies have committed US$200 million to develop the center’s infrastructure and the necessary human resources. Construction is expected to commence this year.

Nvidia’s commitment to AI education in Indonesia

In January 2022, Nvidia signed a memorandum of understanding with the Indonesian government, pledging to train lecturers and over 20,000 university students in AI skills over a five-year period.

This initiative aligns with Nvidia’s heightened push in Southeast Asia, driven by the increasing demand for generative AI.

Nvidia has recently partnered Singapore telco Singtel for a new data center brand, and the Singapore Institute of Technology announced a new AI center in collaboration with the chipmaker.

Expanding partnerships across Southeast Asia

The company also plans to build a pilot manufacturing plant in Malaysia alongside Taiwanese supplier Kinsus Interconnect Technology.

Following a visit to Vietnam last year, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang announced plans to expand partnerships with Vietnamese tech firms, among other initiatives.

Budi Arie Setiadi, Indonesia’s minister of communications and information, attributed Nvidia and Indosat’s decision to establish the AI center in Surakarta to the city’s quality human resources and 5G availability.
